Commodity codes, classification codes, tariff codes, HS codes or Taric codes are one and the same thing. These unique codes are designed to classify products and show the various rules which apply when importing and exporting goods.
Along with the origin of the products (where wholly made), these codes are required for declaration purposes, to determine the rates of VAT and duties and if any restrictions or certification are required.
These numbers include various pieces of information providing a detailed picture of the type of product, materials used in the product and how it is produced. The first six digits are recognised globally. Ten digits are required for import with eight digits required for export.
As a business owner, you have a legal responsibility to use the correct commodity code for your products.
The Taric system provides codes for products moving in and out of Europe.
